Architectural Design IV
In Semester 4, themed "Engaging Environment and Community," the studio focuses on creating sustainable designs that harmonize with environmental conditions and cater to specific community needs. Students will explore how buildings can respond to natural elements like sun, wind, and temperature, while also addressing energy efficiency. By studying precedents and considering factors such as site topography, vegetation, and socio-cultural dynamics, students will develop designs that integrate seamlessly with their surroundings. The module emphasizes the application of prior knowledge from the Architecture and Environment and Asian Architecture modules, encouraging students to craft design narratives that foster a strong sense of community and enhance user experiences.
The Architectural Design IV course for April 2024 begins by centering the environment and community in the design process, emphasizing how architecture can foster a sense of community both now and in the future. The course's aim is to develop a deep understanding of the site context through Site Analysis and Design Response, which will inform subsequent projects. In tutorial groups, students will conduct site visits to identify both the tangible and intangible qualities that define the site's character and engage with the local community to understand their needs.
Project 1B focuses on exploring the concept of materiality in architecture, emphasizing its role in shaping user experience and supporting communal activities. Students are tasked with designing a Learning Pod that showcases architectural form and materiality tailored to specific activities. This project encourages students to consider how materials convey meaning, function structurally, and enhance the spatial experience of users. The insights gained from this exploration will directly inform the programmatic requirements for the subsequent Project 1C.
Assignment P1C: Neighbourhood
Learning Centre
The project involves designing a Neighbourhood Learning Centre within the proposed Neighbourhood Park Plan at USJ14 Park. Students must develop comprehensive design proposals that integrate site analysis findings and precedent studies. The design should create narratives that address both environmental and community needs, emphasizing environmentally sensitive building enclosures that minimize impact. Students will explore complex spatial typologies and passive sustainable design strategies to ensure the Learning Centre harmonizes with the site and enhances the sense of community through thoughtful spatial experiences.
